Designing a better record box
When you're just getting started collecting records, the traditional milk-crate / Yaffa block / giant bin is your most likely storage solution. As you start getting more records, you come to a point where you ask 1 - Should I keep getting these plastic things? or 2 - Should I get a dedicated shelf for my albums? This middle area is where a lot of people end up - too few records for a shelf, too many to have milk-crates all over the place.
We thought it would be great to have something better than a milk-crate but that you could grow with as your collection grows. Right now, we're working with a friend of ours that designs furniture as a hobby here in New York to come up with a modular solution for ourselves.
We're finalizing the design and will share the process of a prototype in the coming months.
What do you think? We would be interested in hearing your thoughts in the comments on how you store your records and how many you have.

The small expedit is a great option for this.. it only has 8 cubes for records, and can be turned sideways. Quite a few people I know have theirs sideways with the turntable sitting on top. The fact that you can buy drawers for each cube to store 7"s and other miscellaneous items in is another huge plus.
I think this is a great idea and I look forward to see your designs. I have around a 1000 records but I don't have the space to dedicate an entire wall to them. So anything that can be modularized is perfect for me. then i could put not so important albums in one location and keep my dedicated "awesome" stuff in another location.
btw, this is a great blog. thanks for all your posts
Space always being an issue with vinyl, the most efficient way to store them (for me) has always been with the spine facing front, as opposed to record-store style cover-front that you experience with the Yaffas, etc. However, if you could somehow integrate space for 7" records, that would be amazing. However, with 7" records, filing and viewing is almost always with the cover facing front. How one might work that out would be interesting... Could be really really cool.
I use these guys in the UK - spybox for my albums http://www.spybox.co.uk/
Those SpyBoxes look pretty cool but seem pricey for MDF board...
I am definitely interested in seeing the design. As an amateur woodworker/carpentar a template woud be nice for building my own vinyl storage. Thanks, and I agree with Colonel 32 - great blog!
Very interesting idea. I believe this can solved most people problems. I'm very interested to see the prototype picture.

I would very much love to see what you have coming. My wife and I are filling our IKEA shelving fairly quickly and space is at a premium for us.
IKEA Expedit has been pretty helpful - the large ones hold a LOT of albums.
IVAR shelving from IKEA rules it.
